How VAT is calculated
VAT (IVA in Spain) is a percentage applied to the taxable base. If you know the base and want the invoice total:
Total = Base × (1 + rate ÷ 100)If instead you have a total with VAT already included (for example, the price on a receipt) and want the base:
Base = Total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)The VAT amount is the difference between the total and the base. At 21%, a base of €100 gives €21 of VAT and a total of €121. Conversely, €121 including VAT is €100 of base plus €21 of VAT.
VAT rates in Spain
- 21% (standard): most goods and services.
- 10% (reduced): for example passenger transport, hospitality and some food.
- 4% (super-reduced): basics such as bread, milk, fruit or books.
- 0% / exempt: exempt operations, such as some healthcare or education services.
Rates and how they apply can change. This calculator is for guidance only: confirm the right rate for each operation with your accountant.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Choose “Remove VAT”, enter the VAT-inclusive price and select the rate. The calculator divides the total by 1 plus the rate (1.21 for 21%) and gives you the base and the VAT amount.
What is the difference between taxable base and VAT amount?
The taxable base is the amount before tax. The VAT amount is the tax calculated on that base. Base plus VAT is the invoice total.
Can I use a different VAT rate?
Yes. Select “Other rate…” and enter the percentage you need, with decimals if required.
Is what I type stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and we don’t send or save anything.
